NHRC team reaches Janakpur

JANAKPUR, July 22: A team of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday started on-field monitoring of the Madhes districts after receiving complaints that the police used excessive force against protestors during feedback collection on the draft constitution.

A team led by NHRC Spokesperson Mohana Ansari on Wednesday met injured as well as other protesters in Janakpur. "We are here to investigate what happened here during public hearings on the draft constitution," said Ansari. "I found some of the protesters were severely injured," she added.During interaction with Ansari, the injured said that police brutally baton-charged them. "People have complained that police also baton-charged non-protesters inside the vegetable market and prevented ambulances from carrying the injured," said Ansari.

Ansari is to visit Rautahat on Thursday.

Meanwhile, various youth clubs from Janakpur sent a memorandum to Prime Minister Sushil Koirala seeking action against the policemen involved in the incidents. They have also demanded action against DSP Krishna Prasai and Inspector Niranjan Thapa.

Protests were held in the district at the call of Madhes based parties . As the Madhesi cadres tried to protest and obstruct public hearings on the draft constitution, police had used excessive force in various places.
