NHRC’s recommendation to govt to ensure human rights of migrant workers

KATHMANDU, April 14: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has recommended to the government to pay heed to the human rights of migrant workers.

Bilateral agreements are signed between the NHRC and the destination countries for the protection of human rights of Nepali migrant workers. The NHRC had made a 16-point recommendation to the government in 2075BS and a nine-point recommendation in 2077BS in a bid to make foreign employment safe and dignified. According to a report released recently, the NHRC furnished a total of 58 points of recommendation to the government so far on the rights of migrant workers.

The issues as making accountable the recruitment process, migrant workers' rights to access justice, rapid rescue, dignified return, sustainable integration of migrant returnees in community, address to the rights of migrant workers' children, and right to life and health to the families of migrant workers, among others were included in the recommendations.

The status report on human rights of Nepali migrant workers, 2079 was prepared on the basis of information/data collected and study, monitoring and research conducted from fiscal year 2076/77 to 2078/79BS.

NHRC Spokesperson Dr Tikaram Pokharel said that the rights body has written to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers to implement the recommendations made in the report.
