KATHMANDU, Dec 9: Chairman of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday accused the political parties of protecting human rights violators and promoting impunity in the country.

“The commission for truth and reconciliation, peace and reconstruction commission and the commission on disappearance have not been formed. On the other hand, action is not being taken against human rights violators. Impunity is rampant due to political protection to the criminals. This should be addressed,” NHRC chairman Kedarnath Upadhyaya said in his statement issued on the eve of the International Human Rights Day.

He said common people have been frustrated due to parties´ failure to take the peace process ahead on the basis of consensus.

He urged the government to make public the whereabouts of 835 people disappeared during the insurgency. “The government should be committed to punish the culprits and compensate the victims,” the statement said. The government is not seriously working toward reinstating those who were displaced and toward returning the properties seized during the conflict to the rightful owners.
