NGA felicitates golfer Shrestha

KATHMANDU, May 18: In recognition of his victory in the Surya Nepal Masters, Nepal Golf Association (NGA) honored Nepal´s No 1 golfer Shivaram Shrestha in the capital on Saturday. Shrestha had won the Surya Nepal Masters title on May 11 to become the second Nepali golfer to achieve the feat after Deepak Thapa Magar in 2007.



Yuvaraj Lama, the member secretary of National Sports Council (NSC), gave away a washing machine, a mobile set and letter of appreciation to Shrestha. The gifts were sponsored by IMS Tele Pvt Ltd. Shrestha´s wife Kalpana Lama was also felicitated on the occasion. [break]



Nepal Professional Golfers´ Association (NPGA) and locals of Kathmandu Ward No 9 (Sinamangal) had earlier honored Shrestha for his achievement.



"Shrestha´s success is the result of the hard work of all the people associated with golf," said Member Secretary Lama.



NGA President Madhukar Yakthumba lauded Shretsha for the achievement and opined that winning the Surya Nepal Masters was a big success for Nepali golf. Yakthumba also requested the NSC to avail lands for golf course to develop golf from the grassroots.



NPGA President Rabindra Man Shrestha opined that golf had made a giant stride in the past five years. "Now we have started achieving results and we hope it continues in future as well," said Shrestha.



"Shivaram now faces the challenge of giving continuity to his performance at the same level. We also have the responsibility to provide Shiva Ram with training, clinics and other support," said Shrestha.



NGA General Secretary Tashi Ghale, who had spotted Shrestha as a golf talent at the age of 14, praised the golfer for being able to write his name in the history of golf.
