Traffic police had relocated the zebra crossing to the new point stating that zebra crossings placed at the vehicle crossing points resulted in a number of accidents.[break]
Coincidently, the new location of the zebra crossing falls in front of the newly opened Kesha Plaza - a five-storey shopping complex situated between New Road Gate and Pako New Road.
"We organized the protest from 1 PM to 2 PM as our requests for the last two weeks to relocate zebra crossing at the previous location fell on deaf ears. Relocation of the zebra crossing has been done only to benefit Kesha Plaza," said Sunil Goel, an organizer of the protest.
Businessmen, who are staging their protests, have formally lodged their complaints at the Janasewa police station on Tuesday.
Sitaram Hachhethu, in-charge of Durbar Marg Traffic Police, claimed that the earlier zebra crossing was shifted to the new point keeping in view the growing number of accidents due to crossing for pedestrians and vehicles being at the same point.
"Relocation of zebra crossing in New Road is not an isolated case. We have started a drive to relocate zebra crossings that are situated at the crossing points of vehicles," said Hechhethu.
He said traffic police has already relocated zebra crossings to new points in six places including Keshar Mahal, Durbar Marg and Tripureswore. He said agitating businessmen and traffic police will hold talks to settle the dispute at 8 AM on Thursday.
