NUWAKOT, Oct 9: Two organizations in the capital are mulling to make use of a new technology that would help reduce odor pollution caused by gaseous emission from the Sisdol landfill site in Nuwakot.

Nepalese Farming Institute (NFI) and Nepalese Waste Management (NWM) have jointly initiated an effort to reduce the odor pollution at the Sisdol landfill site. Waste generated in the capital is being disposed of at Sisdol site for many years now. [break]

Khadak Bhakta Poudel, founder of NFI, informed that they have already started initial study on reducing odor pollution using a new micro-organism that destroys germs that help produce foul smell. NFI is involved in organic and sustainable farming management for 30 years.

Poudel claimed that the technology to be implemented in Sisdol landfill site has already been tested in South Asian countries like Bhutan, India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. The new technology was developed by Samoj Mahat, coordinator of NWM, a technician, who has long been using this technology to produce compost manure from waste generated by slaughter houses in Lalitpur.

In the first phase of the experiment, a suspension containing the aforementioned micro-organism is being sprayed at the landfill site since last Thursday. “The experiment will be carried out from September 26 to October 1,” said Poudel.

He also informed that scientists from Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) would verify the effectiveness of the new technology. Poudel further stated that if the new technology proves effective, the same method would be used in 58 municipalities across the country to control odor pollution impact at landfill sites.

Technicians from Japan and Germany have long been carrying out experiments to control odor pollution impact, but without much success. The experiment is being carried out under the technical assistance of NFI, as well as from NWM and Nepalese Natural Bio-Product (NNB).
