Nepali, Indian supreme courts to strengthen judicial cooperation

The Supreme Court of India has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Supreme Court of Nepal to develop, promote, and strengthen judicial cooperation between the two countries. Chief Justice of Nepal Prakash Man Singh Raut and Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna witnessed the signing on Monday.

KATHMANDU, April 8: The Supreme Court of India has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Supreme Court of Nepal to develop, promote, and strengthen judicial cooperation between the two countries. Chief Justice of Nepal Prakash Man Singh Raut and Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna witnessed the signing on Monday.



Inspired by the cordial and friendly ties between the two nations, the MoU aims to enhance cooperation between their judiciaries. It encourages the exchange of information on recent legal and judicial developments and facilitates interactions among judges and judicial officials through exchange visits, training programs, and academic initiatives.

Recognizing the role of technology in clearing case backlogs, expediting court procedures, and improving stakeholder services, the MoU also includes provisions for sharing information on technologies used in the respective courts and related institutions. 


Both judiciaries will form a joint working group to further promote judicial cooperation and prepare collaborative plans and frameworks.


The Government of India and the Supreme Court of India have previously signed similar MoUs with the Supreme Courts of Israel, the Republic of Singapore, Bangladesh, and Bhutan, as well as with the governments of Tunisia, Zambia, Morocco, the Maldives, and several other countries and institutions.
