KATHMANDU: Anoop Bikram Shahi, known for his versatility in the Nepali film industry, has made his Bollywood debut in the upcoming war drama Battle of Galwan, appearing alongside Indian superstar Salman Khan.

Produced under the Salman Khan Films banner, the movie is based on the 2020 Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese forces. Salman Khan portrays Colonel Santosh Babu—marking his first-ever biopic in a decades-long career—while Shahi plays a key role opposite the Bollywood icon.

The first shooting schedule recently wrapped up along the India–China border in Ladakh.

“I have been over the moon to screen with a global star like Salman Khan,” said Shahi, who returned to Nepal after completing the first schedule. “This isn’t just my personal breakthrough in Bollywood; it represents Nepal and the Nepali film industry. I feel proud to bring our country’s name to an international stage.”

Shahi described the shooting experience as “amazing,” praising Salman Khan as even more humble and supportive than expected. He added that Salman frequently expressed curiosity about Nepal and Nepali culture, which Shahi deeply appreciated.

The second phase of shooting is planned for Mumbai between October and November.

Famous for his action-packed roles, Shahi is expected to play a prominent part opposite Salman in this war drama, though he declined to share details about his character. “We’re still in the shooting phase. More will be revealed in time, and audiences will see it on screen,” he said.

The film has generated significant buzz since its announcement, largely due to Salman Khan’s involvement. Shahi’s inclusion adds extra significance for Nepali audiences. Although he quietly returned to Nepal after the first schedule, he had hinted at the project on social media without confirming details.

Battle of Galwan is directed by veteran filmmaker Apurva Lakhia, known for films such as Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost, Shootout at Lokhandwala, Haseena Parker, and Mission Istanbul. The release date has yet to be announced.

Shahi’s entry into Bollywood is being hailed as a milestone for Nepali cinema, potentially opening new opportunities for the country’s film industry on the global stage.

He has acted in more than a dozen Nepali films, with notable performances in Hasiya, Pitambar, Jaar, Dukhi Aatma, Kri and others.

He is also a gang leader in Himalayan Roadies.
