Nepalgunj hospital bribes relatives after patient’s death

NEPALGUNJ, June 24: A Nepalgunj-based hospital has been found bribing relatives of a woman who died while undergoing uterus surgery in return to not to make the incident public.

Western Hospital, Nepagunj provided Rs 800,000 as a compensatation to the death of Saraswati Oli, 50, of Kalika-8, Bardiya. The hospital had requested the relatives not to make the incident public."The doctor invited us to her home and provide Rs 800,000 as a compensation requesting not make the incident public," one of the Oli's relatives said. The doctor had admitted that she made a mistake while undergoing surgery, she added.

Saraswati had visited Dr. Kalpana of Bheri Zonal hospital complaining uterus pain. However, the doctor referred her to Western hospital, where she is also the partner. "The doctors suggested us to undergo surgery immediately. However, my mother wanted to take rest for few days," son Dhan Bahadur added, "Mother had to undergo surgery after the doctor insisted."

Saraswati complained of difficulty following two and half hour surgery. The hospital then referred the patient to some other hospitals. She was rushed to Nepalgunj Teaching hospital which detected kidney injuries. She was taken to Lucknow, India where she breathed her last.
