Nepal to participate in Int'l basketball C'ship

KATHMANDU, July 9: Nepal has confirmed its participation in the International Youth 18 3X3 Basketball Championship to be held in Italy in September this year said Dinesh Thapa, General Secretary of Nepal Basketball Association (NeBA).



Thapa who has just returned from the International Basketball Federation Managers Workshop held in Malaysia informed that Nepal has got the opportunity to play in the tournament. [break]



The meeting decided that a team from Nepal will participate in the tournament and Thapa said that Nepal will probably send their men´s team for the tournament.



Along with that, Nepal´s U-16 National Team will participate in the Asian U-16 Basketball Championship Qualifiers in Delhi scheduled to be held from August 1-3. The players selected from the Talent Hunt program are kept under the training for the tournament. Biku Shrestha, who has been tranining the players will pick the players for the tournament. In the Asian U-16 Basketball Championship Qualifier, teams from South Asian countries will participate.



Thapa informed that the name of Three-on-Three Basketball has been changed to 3X3 Basketball. The governing body of basketball, International Basketball Federation (FIBA) decided to take the 3X3 basketball to the Olympics with the slogan “From Street to Olympics”.



Thapa said that the officials of FIBA holding consultations with the International Olympics Committee (IOC) to include the 3X3 Basketball in the 2016 Olympics to be held on Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
