Nepal sees sharp spike in COVID-19 cases, 968 new cases recorded on Friday alone

KATHMANDU, Jan 7: Nepal recorded 968 new cases of COVID-19 on Friday along with 262 recoveries and zero deaths, according to the latest information provided by the Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP). As many as 27 new cases of Omicron variant have been detected across the country as of Friday.

As many as 14,971 swab samples were tested for COVID-19 on the same day. Of them, 572 PCR and 396 antigen tests turned out to be positive for the deadly virus.

There are currently 5,837 active cases of COVID-19 across the country. Among them, 5,286 are in home isolation, 455 in institutional isolation, 81 in ICUs, and 15 on ventilators. Similarly, 113 people are currently in quarantine facilities. So far, 11,602 people have died of viral infection across the country.

On Friday, Kathmandu Valley recorded 310 cases of the virus. Of them, 221 were recorded in Kathmandu, 30 in Bhaktapur, and 59 in Lalitpur districts.

Meanwhile, the meeting of the COVID-19 Crisis Management Center (CCMC) is currently underway in order to make a decision to contain the further spread of the COVID-19. Sources said the meeting is likely to take decisions on various prohibitory measures.  

The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has urged all hospital and health workers to make necessary preparations to tackle the fresh wave of COVID-19. The ministry has also urged all people to follow safety protocols to help contain the fresh wave of COVID-19.
