Nepal's first parliamentary oppn leader no more

KATHMANDU, Aug 12: The opposition leader in Nepal's first ever parliament, Bharat Shamsher Rana, died on Saturday in Calcutta, India. He was 93.

His nephew Uday Samsher Rana, who is a leader of the Nepali Congress (NC), confirmed the death. According to Uday Samsher, his uncle had been well when he went to bed on Friday night. But he was found dead in the morning.

Rana was general secretary of the then main opposition party, Gorkha Parishad. He was elected to parliament from Dhading district. After King Mahendra's coup, Rana merged his party with the NC in a bid to intensify the democratic movement.

A brother of Rana prime minister Mohan Shamsher , Bharat Shamsher had opposed the panchayat regime. The palace placed a bounty on his head and he lived in exile in Calcutta. He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.

According to relatives, his body will be handed over to a Calcutta-based teaching institute as per his wishes.

Senior leader of NC Ram Chandra Paudel has extended condolences on Rana's demise . Paudel recalled Rana as a forthright, energetic and spirited political leader . He also said that Rana's death is a huge loss to the democratic movement.
