Inaugurating the forensic labs at the Police Headquarters, IGP Upendra Kanta Aryal expected the technology to be tantamount to a 'digital detective' available at fingertips to curb crimes with new dynamism.
“Even though the crime rates have been decreasing, the module of crimes is becoming more sophisticated and complicated to curb. So modification and modernization of crime investigation tools, techniques are the demand of the current policing,” he said.
In the program organized on the occasion of the 60th Crime Investigation Day, IGP Aryal expressed that the technology was installed as an attempt to modernize and well equip the Nepal Police through scientific, evidence-based investigation procedures. He also informed that about 90 per cent of criminal activities occur with the use of technological innovations.
Joint-Secretary Chakra Bahadur Buda of the Home Ministry said police without modern investigation tools alone can't solve criminal cases.
“As investigation is the pillar of the criminal justice system, the investigation tools must be intact and as per the changing dimension of crime,” Mahendra Upadhya, Director of Judgment Execution Directorate at the Supreme Court, said.
On the occasion, various police personnel were awarded for their outstanding performances. The awarded police personnel were SP Yog Bahadur Pal, DSPs Bhuwan Babu Khadka, Lalit Bahadur Tamang and Ram Bahadur Chhetri, Head Constables Prabhu Kuhar and Prem Prasad Sharma and Constable Surendra Karki.
The best police station was awarded to Local Police Office, Simara.
Earlier, the Nepal Police had handed Digital Forensic Labs to the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), Maharajgunj and Metropolitan Police Crime Division (MPCD), Teku. The devices are believed help in getting rid of the daily headaches posed by telecommunication and computer-related crimes.
