ADB had provided the grant for introducing Voice over Broadband Service (VoBS), broadband service in 38 districts and national ID and digitize land map and ownership records. However, the project has not been implemented due to lack of coordination among different line ministries.[break]
“This inactiveness of the government can lead to withdrawal of the grant assistance,” Nepali Congress lawmaker Gagan Thapa told the meeting.
Presenting a report of a committee on ICT, Thapa said that less than one percent of the 32 TB-capacity Government Integrated Data Centre was being utilized at present. Thapa requested all government agencies to store their electronic data at the centre.
The fund presently has around Rs 2.5 billion.
Thapa had drafted a report by holding discussion with stakeholders and ICT experts. He also handed over the report to the Prime Minister.
Lawmaker Hishila Yami called on the government to end dispute over jurisdiction between the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) and Ministry of Information and Communications at the earliest. “I think the IT sector should come under the purview of the MoST,” she said.
