In her death, the prime minister said, the country has lost not only a woman leader, but an icon of democratic values and principles.
"She was a politician who succeeded in establishing her unique and original identity in Nepali politics," Prime Minister Nepal said in a statement issued Friday afternoon.
Acharya´s capacity for not compromising on moral values even in difficult circumstances is exemplary for all, he said in his eulogy.
"History will never forget the contributions of Acharya who always stood firm in her principles and values and fought with determination against corruption, irregularities and wrongful attitudes even when she was in power," the prime minister said.
She passed away at 4.25 a.m. Friday, doctors at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) said. Acharya, 67, had been suffering from Alzheimer´s disease. She was admitted to TUTH on Wednesday. Previously, she had been to New Delhi and Bangkok for treatment.
She was cremated at Pashupati Aryaghat in the afternoon.
Meanwhile, the Nepali Congress has announced that the party flag will be at half mast for three days to mourn Acharya´s death.
