KATHMANDU, April 24: Senior leaders of the major political parties have started touring far-flung districts and campaigning in favor of their respective parties in view of the upcoming Constituent Assembly (CA) elections.

Former Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal visited Rautahat and Sarlahi districts on Wednesday and addressed separate functions in the districts. Addressing the gatherings, CPN-UML leader Nepal came down heavily on UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal for the latter´s recent remarks that CPN-UML has been facing a “crisis of existence”.[break]

“It seems that Dahal has a blinkered view on politics and is mentally retarded because a man with a sound mental condition would never gives such silly remarks,” said Nepal. He said the UCPN (Maoist) does not have any ideological conviction and that they are neck-deep in corruption. He said the Maoist leaders would face the fate of former King Gyanendra Shah.

Stating that CPN-UML´s leadership in Constituent Assembly (CA) was necessary to ensure promulgation of the new constitution, Nepal said his party is mulling an alliance with another political party.

Meanwhile, Nepali Congress (NC) President Sushil Koirala claimed that his party would emerge as the largest party in the coming elections.

“Congress must see the coming election as an opportunity to help the party emerge as the largest party in the CA,” said Koirala in an interaction with Congress party members held here in Nepalgunj on Wednesday. He argued that only NC can ensure a new constitution.

He also instructed his cadres to activate the party´s district, area, villages and ward committees so as to be able to reach out to the grassroots.

“You shouldn´t limit your activities in the city and town areas. Visit far-flung areas and create an environment for election,” Koirala instructed his party members.

Koirala also claimed that the coming election would be held in in coming winter.
