The government of UP state which shares border with Nepal has deployed the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), a border force.
The first phase of elections begin in the state on Thursday.
The newspaper said that the focus this time was on trade and transit points to prevent illegal movement of people from these routes.
"The border, which otherwise witnesses free movement of people from both sides, has been sealed and patrolling by SSB has been stepped up in view of the first phase of polls. The movement will be allowed in normal course after the end of first phase on April 16," the newspaper quoted an unnamed Indian home ministry official.
The border will also be sealed two days ahead of phase two (April 23) and phase three (April 30) in both UP and Bihar.
