Nepal imports Rs 24bn of agro-products via Kakarbhitta

According to Nand Kishor Singh, chief of the Plant Quarantine Office in Kakarbhitta, agricultural products worth Rs 24.2674 billion were imported from India, China, Australia and Bangladesh in fiscal year 2025/26. The imports included food grains, pulses, fresh vegetables and fruits.

JHAPA, Aug 23: Agricultural products worth more than Rs 24 billion were imported into Nepal through the eastern border point of Kakarbhitta during the last fiscal year.


According to Nand Kishor Singh, chief of the Plant Quarantine Office in Kakarbhitta, agricultural products worth Rs 24.2674 billion were imported from India, China, Australia and Bangladesh in fiscal year 2025/26. The imports included food grains, pulses, fresh vegetables and fruits. Food grains and pulses accounted for the largest share of the imports, he said.

The imports from India included rice worth Rs 242.313 million and millet worth Rs 188.3 million.


Similarly, 1,996 metric tonnes of chickpeas worth Rs 182.799 million were imported from Australia and India. The office data also shows that 796 metric tonnes of black gram worth Rs 108.854 million were imported from Australia.


Among fresh vegetables, significant quantities of tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers and pumpkins were imported from India. Over the year, tomatoes worth Rs 143.966 million, cucumbers worth Rs 79.064 million and chillies worth Rs 32.435 million were imported.


In the fruit category, apples, pineapples, watermelons and pears were mainly imported from India and China. The Plant Quarantine Office said apples worth Rs 295.972 million were imported from India and China, while watermelons worth Rs 142.481 million were brought in from India.
