KATHMANDU, Nov 10: The government has introduced new rules aimed at regulating the use of social media.

A cabinet meeting held on Thursday endorsed the guidelines prepared by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology. The guideline is expected to ensure that social media platforms are not misused to incite conflict and promote hatred.

The new set of guidelines outlines the necessity for social media platforms, such as Facebook, TikTok, and Twitter, operating in Nepal to register with the government. It also specifies the responsibilities of both the social media platform operators and users.

According to the guidelines, it is now mandatory for social media platforms to be listed and obtain a license within three months. Furthermore, these platforms are required to renew their licenses every three years.

The directive emphasizes that social network platforms not listed may be subject to closure at any time. To facilitate the listing and permission process, a 'Social Network Management Unit' will be established within the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology.

The guidelines state, "Any person(s) or organization(s) operating the social media platform, registered with the government, will have to renew the license every three years. The Ministry of Communication and Information Technology reserves the right to close social media platforms that are not listed at any time."
