In his inaugural speech to the two-day seminar entitled ´Chemical Weapons Convention and Chemical Safety and Security Management´ on Monday, Shrestha said Nepal has been continuously advocating for the promotion of disarmament and non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction around the globe. "…Nepal supports the rational control of conventional arms, including small arms and light weapons, while maintaining the position that every state has legitimate rights to acquire such weapons for defense purpose," he said.
Participants from various SAARC member countries are attending the seminar organized jointly by Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), the international implementing agency for the chemical weapons convention and Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA).
In his statement on behalf of the SAARC Secretary General, G. Prasanna, Director of the SAARC Secretariat stressed on the importance of regional cooperation for the elimination of the hazardous chemicals and chemical weapons for global safety and security.
Nepal is scheduled to present a paper on "Chemical Safety and Management" during the seminar highlighting the major efforts made by the Government to implement the provisions of the CWC and the proper handling of the hazardous chemical substances. The Seminar is expected to come up with useful ideas and recommendations for the establishment of the world free of chemical weapons and hazardous chemicals as envisioned by the OPCW.
