Nepal exports electricity worth Rs 7.55 billion to India in first two months of FY

KATHMANDU, Oct 9: Nepal has exported electricity worth Rs 7.55 billion to India during the first two months of the current Fiscal Year (FY) 2024-25.


The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) exported 1.292 million units of electricity to India from the excess after fulfilling the country’s domestic consumption in mid-July to mid-August (Shrawan) and mid-August to mid-September (Bhadra). NEA has exported electricity worth Rs 3.995 billion in Shrawan, while electricity worth Rs 3.55 billion was exported in Bhadra.


In Shrawan, 492.8 million units of electricity were exported to India, while 536.29 million units of electricity were exported in the month of Bhadra. The average electricity export rate over the two months was Rs 7.33 per unit, with Shrawan averaging Rs 8.11 per unit and Bhadra at Rs 6.62 per unit.

In the first week of September, the highest amount of electricity worth Rs 995.5 million has been exported. In the last week of August, the electricity worth Rs 698 million has been exported.


The electricity trade with India is conducted in Indian rupees (IC). Therefore, the electricity worth IC 4.71 billion has been sold in the first two months of the current fiscal year.


Kulman Ghising, Manager Director of the NEA, said that the export of electricity is currently affected due to damage to hydropower facilities and transmission lines caused by the recent floods and landslides. The NEA has set a  target of exporting electricity worth Rs 30 billion.


The NEA is selling the excess electricity in the day-ahead and real-time market of Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) at competitive rates and in accordance with the bilateral medium-term electricity sales agreement in the states of Haryana and Bihar.
