RASUWA, Oct 19: The ongoing construction of Nepal-China Friendship Bridge on the Bhotekhosi river at Rasuwagadi will be completed in the next two months, according to the Chinese authorities, who are building the structure.

The bridge, which extends from Rasuwagadi of Nuwakot to the border between the two countries, will open new business avenues for the two neighbors. [break]

The bridge, after the completion, will connect the popular Rasuwagdhi-Galchhi-Parsa-Thora check posts to one of the major business trails between the two countries.

The old bridge connecting the border check posts of the two countries will be toppled once the project is complete.

The bridge project, which is totally financed by the Chinese government, was halted two years ago after the Department of Archeology (DoA) of Nepal, had raised concerns over the possible damage to the historic fort of Rasuwagadi.

A three member team from the Nepal government was deployed to inspect the construction site. Only after the study of vulnerability of the fort, officials from both the countries had decided resume the construction work of the bridge -- a feet above the fort.

China had already built three pillars of the bridge before the construction come to a grinding halt.  The construction work is being carried out by a Tibet-based company, J. Honggi. Group.

According to the company, 1,200 cubic meters of sand, gravel and stones of the Bhote Koshi have been used in the building of the bridge.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government has completed the construction of 16 km gravel road from Syabrubesi to Rasuwagadi. A total of Rs 1.33 billion was spent.

“The construction of a new track, which will eventually connect the Syabrubesi and Rasuwagadi check posts, is also taking place,” said the Local Development Officer of Rasuwa, Gyan Raj Pandey.

“District level discussions are taking place to extend the connectivity to Chitwan and Thora, too” added Panday. As per the agreement between Nepal and China inked in 2007, they had decided to renovate the Rashuwagadi- Syabrubesi road section and construct 10 bridges in between the two check posts.
