Nepal bags MDG Award

KATHMANDU, Sept 20: Nepal has received an MDG Award for outstanding national leadership, commitment and progress toward achievement of Millennium Development Goal on "Improve Maternal Health".



According to a statement issued by the Permanent Mission of Nepal to the UN, Nepal´s ambassador to the UN, Gyan Chandra Acharya, received the award on behalf of Nepal government, amidst a function Monday evening. [break]



Nepal was selected by the MDG Awards Committee, in collaboration with the UN Office for Partnerships, among the 49 Least Developed Countries (LDCs) for accomplishing significant achievement in MDG Goal-5.



Under MDG Goal-5, Nepal reduced the maternal mortality rate (MMR) from 415 deaths in 2,000 to 229 deaths in 2010 per 100,000 live births. MDG Goal-5 calls for reducing MMR by three quarters by 2015.
