KATHMANDU, April 11: Constituent Assembly (CA) Chairman Subas Nembang has said that following the major leap forward in the task of integrating former Maoist combatants into the Nepal Army (NA) all efforts should now be concentrated on constitution writing without further delay.

He urged top leaders of the major political parties to sit for talks and start resolving the disputes in constitution writing without wasting a single day.[break]

"Leaders from major political parties have been announcing in public that they will speed up the constitution writing process immediately after the integration process reaches an irreversible point," CA Chairman Nembang told a group of reporters at his chambers at Singha Durbar, Wednesday. "The situation has now developed in a very positive way and the statute drafting process shouldn´t be delayed under any pretext."

Nembang urged the leaders to immediately call meetings of the CA´s Constitutional Committee (CC) and the dispute resolution subcommittee under the CC as well as hold inter-party talks among the major political forces and other stakeholders.

Floating a plan of action at the CA´s Business Advisory Committee (BAC) last week on completing the constitution writing before the CA term expires on May 27, Nembang gave an April 17 deadline for the CC, which is tasked with resolve the remaining disputes in constitution writing and preparing an integrated draft of the new constitution.

As per the schedule, the CA is to vote on unresolved issues (if any) on April 18 and 19, prepare the integrated draft by April 27 and hold public deliberations on the draft until May 13. "We must now work as per the latest schedule which was endorsed by the BAC in the presence of the top leaders. We must strike while the iron is hot and we simply can´t afford to miss these deadlines," Nembang said.
