KATHMANDU, Dec 30: The ruling Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN-UML have decided to jointly launch a political mobilization campaign across the country to counter “unrestrained Maoist activities” and create a conducive atmosphere for writing the new constitution and taking the peace process to its logical end.

In a two-point deal reached on Wednesday, the ruling parties have also decided to formally call on the Maoists to come to the negotiating table Thursday for completing the constitution-writing and peace process.[break]

“We decided to launch a political mobilization campaign across the country to complete the constitution-writing and peace process,” Nepali Congress General Secretary Bimalendra Nidhi said after the meeting held at Singha Durbar, Wednesday. The ruling parties plan to launch a joint campaign from the local level against the “growing tide of Maoist violence and unruly activities”, and to turn public opinion in favor of constitution-writing and the peace process.

“The political campaign is directed against whoever stands against the peace process and constitution-writing,” said UML leader Kesab Badal. “We are still working on the strategy.”

As part of their political campaign, the ruling parties will hold rallies and mass sensitization programs.

As per the agreement, the two political parties will launch their political mobilization to complete the constitution-writing and peace process, and second, they will call on the Maoists to come to the negotiating table for the integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist army as per the spirit of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) and for drafting a federal democratic republican constitution for Nepal.

“The peace process including the task of army integration should be completed as soon as possible,” said NC leader Ram Sharan Mahat.

On Tuesday, the ruling parties demanded completion of the integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist army before the new constitution is promulgated.

The party leaders said they would call on the Maoists for talks in this regard, Thursday.

Maoists seek power by pleasing India: Nidhi

Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Bimalendra Nidhi has accused the Maoists of trying to form a new government by pleasing India.

"The Maoists are trying to form a government by pleasing India rather than through the people´s vote or consensus among the political parties," said Nidhi while addressing a corner meeting of the NC-affiliated Tarun Dal. Tarun Dal activists marched from Maitighar Mandala to New Baneshwar and held a corner meeting there to protest Maoist attacks against over a dozen NC cadres across the country.

Youth leaders including Tarun Dal President Mahendra Yadav vented anger against the "continued Maoist violence".
