KATHMANDU, July 27: The ruling Nepali Congress (NC) has decided to hold the party’s Mahasamiti meeting from November 27 in Kathmandu.

This decision was taken by a meeting of the Central Working Committee (CWC) of NC held in Sanepa last Tuesday. The three-day meeting is expected to chart the party’s future course of action.

This eight-day CWC meeting ended on Wednesday by making various decisions. NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba had addressed questions raised by CWC members before concluding the meeting.

The NC has decided not to hold a Policy Convention as announced earlier for works including constitutional amendments. Several CWC members had raised the demand of holding a Policy Convention during the CWC meeting.

Meanwhile, NC President Deuba has announced to hold the next CWC meeting on September 19. The decision comes amid criticisms from within the party that Deuba was running the party unilaterally even without holding discussions with the party leaders. The CWC meeting was not held for over a year.

The CWC meeting that concluded on Wednesday decided to hold the CWC meeting within two months. "Now the meeting has to be held within two months, and the next meeting is confirmed for September 19," declared President Deuba at the conclusion of the meeting.

During the CWC meeting, General Secretary Gagan Thapa had raised concerns about the effective implementation of the CWC meeting, which should ideally convene every two months. The proposal presented by General Secretary Thapa was endorsed during the meeting.

President Deuba concluded the CWC meeting by announcing the date for the next meeting and thanking all CWC members for their active participation in the meeting that continued for eight days.

General Secy Thapa writes ‘note of dissent’ against party’s decision not to suspend Khand

Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary, Gagan Kumar Thapa, has written a note of dissent against the decision made by the party's Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting that decided not to suspend leaders implicated in the fake Bhutanese refugee scam. NC CWC member and former Home Minister Bal Krishna Khand is currently serving a jail term on charge of being involved in the fake Bhutanese refugee scam.

In his note of dissent, General Secretary Thapa emphasized the significance of addressing criminal charges involving political leaders seriously. He advocated for the suspension of any leader, activist, or member associated with the fake Bhutanese refugee case pending investigation or pre-trial detention.

"It is crucial that we suspend any party member, regardless of their position, if they are under investigation or detained before trial in connection to the fake Bhutanese refugee case. Such a stance upholds the rule of law and our commitment to jurisprudence," stated Thapa.

Additionally, Thapa asserted that if any party leader or worker faces serious charges and subsequent arrest, it should be treated as a personal matter for the individual involved and not be politicized or linked to the party as a whole.

"In cases where criminal charges are filed, political parties must take them seriously. Our justice system is designed to handle such situations, and as a result, no political party should find political or moral grounds to shield an official facing criminal charges," Thapa remarked.
