KATHMANDU, Aug 3: Nepali Congress on Tuesday decided that it would explore all options if the parliament fails to elect a new prime minister in Round 4 of the election, its spokesperson said.

Speaking to myrepublica.com., Arjun Narsingh KC said an informal meeting of top leaders of the party which met at the residence of Acting President Sushil Koirala took a decision to try other options, hinting at changing the existing parliamentary regulations which stipulate that the House will go on holding election until a prime minister is appointed. The fourth round of election is scheduled for August 6. [break]

Chairman of the UCPN (Maoist) Pushpa Kamal Dahal and NC Vice-president Ram Chandra Poudel have faced three rounds of election and neither could get a simple majority of 300 votes in the current strength of 599-member House.

Some of the Maoist leaders and CPN-UML leaders have been demanding a change in the regulations, saying it was impractical and even if a government based on simple majority was formed, it would not be a lasting one.

Spokesperson KC also said that the NC would try to forge alliance with all those parties which believe that the Maoist party has to detach itself from its military and para-military structures. “We are confident of getting their support,” he further said, adding that the party was holding a meeting with the CPN-UML with this goal at 2 pm Tuesday.

The parliament has failed to elect a prime minister to replace Madhav Kumar Nepal who resigned on June 30 as the CPN-UML and four Madhesi parties – Madhesi People’s Rights Forum (MPRF), MPRF (Democratic), Tarai-Madhes Democratic Party (TMDP) and Sadbhawana Party (SP) stayed neutral in the election.

These parties have announced they would not take part in an exercise to elect simple majority-wielding government.
