ITAHARI, May 5: Despite a commitment not to call any strike or hold protest programs in view of Nepal Tourism Year-2011, the second largest party in the Constituent Assembly (CA) on Thursday called a strike in Sunsari district.

Daily life was badly affected in the district due to the strike called by the Nepali Congress.[break]

The NC called the district strike to protest an incident there days ago. A gang fight took place between two groups, one led by NC cadre Kaji Dahal and the other led by CPN UML cadre Rupesh Bajgain.

There was no vehicular movement on the highway and other roads due to the strike. Agitators gathered at various points on the highway and obstructed vehicular movement.

However, a few motorcycles, ambulances, hearses and vehicles belonging to diplomatic missions were allowed to move. Industrial units at Sunsari Industry Corridor were closed.

Protestors, however, allowed educational institutions to operate. Both large and small shops were shut due to the strike.

The agitators also obstructed vehicles belonging to Nagarik and Republica dailies. They took control of the vehicles for about 30 minutes before freeing them.

The NC said UML cadres attacked their cadres but police arrested NC cadres instead. Police had arrested Dahal and Kailash Basnet following the incident.

“We will call an indefinite strike if our demand for punishment of those involved in attacking NC cadres goes unheeded,” said Kedar Bhandari, district secretary of the party.
