KATHMANDU, March 26:  Nepali Congress (NC) is going to nominate its Central Member Govinda Bhattarai as a candidate for the by-election in Tanahun-1, which is vacant after Ramchandra Paudel was elected to the post of President.

A leader close to NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba has said  that it was agreed to field Bhattarai as a candidate in Tanahun-1 on Saturday evening at the office bearers' meeting of NC.

Within the NC, Bhattarai is known as a reclusive leader who does not get opportunities. Bhattarai, who has been the president of the Nepal Student Union and the vice president of the Nepal Tarun Dal, has not yet had the opportunity to contest elections.

Deuba had already instructed Bhattarai to prepare for the election.

He has been a representative of the party's convention since BS 2048. He has also been elected as a central member of the NC three times in a row.

Before the last election, Ramchandra Poudel had assured to make Bhattarai a candidate if he became the president.

According to sources, Bhattarai is trying to become a common candidate from the ruling coalition from Tanahun-1.

The Election Commission has fixed the date of by-elections for 3 vacancies in the House of Representatives on April 23.

After Paudel, who won the last election from Tanahun-1, became the president, by-elections are about to be held there.

Similarly, a by-election is about to be held in Chitwan-2, where the position of MP of Rabi Lamichhane, chairman of the Rashtriya Swatantra Party, was canceled by the Supreme Court's decision.

Likewise, a by-election is being held on April 23 in Bara-2 constituency of Vice President Ram Sahay Prasad Yadav.
