KATHMANDU, May 23: Nepali Congress leader Dr Shekhar Koirala has raised questions over the legal discrepancies concerning dual citizenship and passports involving Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane and Federal Parliament General Secretary Padma Prasad Pandey.
Speaking at a program organized by Nepal Press Union Koshi Province chapter to mark its foundation day on Thursday, Koirala highlighted the recent arrest of Kailash Sirohiya for similar issues while the home minister and parliament’s general secretary remain scot free. The NC leader questioned the apparent double standards in law enforcement and democratic accountability.
Dr Koirala criticized the home minister's alleged involvement in cooperative fraud and his attempts to seek immunity due to his position. He expressed concerns over Lamichhane's repeated denials and efforts to undermine investigations into his conduct. "In a country governed by law, how is it that laws apply differently to those in power? Why is it that when ordinary citizens are held accountable, those in prominent positions seem to evade scrutiny? This discrepancy challenges the very foundation of our democracy,” he said.
