KATHMANDU, Dec 9: Senior leader of Nepali Congress (NC) Dr Shekhar Koirala has accused banks of being the biggest loan sharks.

Addressing a program of Chitwan- Kathmandu Prajatantrik Sangam on Saturday, he claimed that banks are the biggest loan sharks in Nepal. "I have been telling people that banks are the loan sharks, and this has made bankers a little upset," he stated.

He said that the country is in a difficult situation economically but banks are seen unaffected by it. He added, “Despite the challenging economic situation in the country, banks are flourishing. It is distributing bonuses. How is that possible?”

Dr Koirala alleged that although the government has decided to give a loan at 5 percent interest rate to the agricultural sector, they have decided not to give a loan to this sector.

“You should go and visit a bank, if you have an acquaintance, they will give you a loan. If not, they will not. If an ordinary citizen goes to take a loan of Rs 1 million to Rs 2 million  they will not get it. But if a billionaire goes and says that he wants to invest in agriculture, He/she will immediately be provided with a loan.”

Dr Koirala also expressed concern that the condition of NC is not so good in Chitwan.

While expressing concern that the situation of the NC in Chitwan is deteriorating, he said that the dialogue between the NC leaders in the village has stopped. "Individualistic character has dominated so much in Chitwan. It is increasing in a way that they do not accept each other. They do not talk to each other,” he said.

Dr Koirala said that it was the shortcoming of the party's central office for this to happen. "Due to our weakness, NC is losing Chitwan from its grasp today," he said.
