KATHMANDU, July 3: The Nepal Bar Association (NBA) has decided not to hold debates on issues other than those related to habeas corpus across the country today.

The NBA has said that it will not hold debates on cases other than the case of habeas corpus today in protest against the arrest of a legal practitioner on the charge of assaulting an officer inside the court.

Lalitpur Bar Association has informed Republica that although the arrested advocate Amir Lamichhane was released on Sunday itself, the protest program announced earlier for today remains the same.

A press release issued by NBA President Gopal Krishna Ghimire on Sunday mentioned that on July 3, there will be no debate on other issues except the debate on habeas corpus in the courts across the country.

Advocate Amir Lamichhane was arrested by the police on the charge of assaulting non-gazetted first class officer Premika Tamang. The NBA made the announcement against the same.

The NBA has demanded that the detained advocate Lamichhane be released within 24 hours, the CCTV footage should be made public, and the complaint given by Lamichhane should be registered.

On June 28, the court employees from all over the country protested against the attack of Tamang while he was working at the District Court, Lalitpur. Advocate Lamichhane was arrested after Tamang filed a petition against Lamichhane in the District Court, Lalitpur demanding action for contempt of court on the same day of the incident.
