KATHMANDU, Aug 15: The National Stroke Treatment Protocol 2025 has been approved. The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) stated that the protocol was ratified through a ministerial-level decision on Friday.
According to the MoHP, the protocol has been designed to ensure uniformity and consistency in stroke treatment across all health facilities in the country, from local to central levels. With the implementation of this protocol, timely and proper treatment of stroke patients is expected to reduce deaths caused by the condition.

In Nepal, the lack of timely stroke treatment has been a severe issue, leading to numerous deaths each year and long-term disabilities for survivors. The ministry expects that the new protocol, with its improved management system, will positively impact treatment practices.
The protocol provides clear guidelines for treatment pathways, from basic hospitals to specialized centers, covering medication, surgical interventions, and rehabilitation.
It also incorporates global standards such as the "Golden Hour," emphasizing that patients should reach a health facility and receive necessary treatment within the first four hours of stroke onset.
Furthermore, the protocol highlights the roles of individuals, families, and communities in stroke treatment and care, the MoHP added.
