KATHMANDU, March 27: National Sports Council has announced the start of countdown to the Fifth National Games to be held in Kathmandu April 6-13. The games are being held after a long gap of 11 years. [break]

“These games will also be looked upon as qualifiers for the upcoming 11th South Asian Games, to be held in Dhaka next year”, said Sports Council Member Secretary Jivan Ram Shrestha, unveiling the theme of the National Games, “Peace, Development, Goodwill and Unity”.

But the government has still to release Rs 150 million out of the 250 million it promised for the games. The estimated budget outlay for the games is 200 million and another 50 million will be alloted for sports infrastructure development. The government has so far only released Rs100 million in two installments of 50 million each.

However, Member Secretary Shrestha is optimistic he will receive all the money in time.

More than 3,500 sportspersons from all over the country will participate in 32 games events. The regional selection tournaments are almost over except in a few games like cricket, chess, wushu and boxing.

There will be 289 gold, 289 silver and 410 bronze medals to be won in the week-long National Games.
