As per the National Census of 2011, there were 1,921,494 individuals living outside the country. Among them, 1,684,029 were males while 237,400 were females. The number of women going abroad increased by 71 percent in the last decade compared to the results of the previous census.

In the past, parents were reluctant to send their daughters to study or work abroad, but now the situation has changed, said Director Dundiraj Lamichhane of the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS). Parents have started giving their daughters a good education and even sending them abroad for study as they are aware that their children are the same, he added.

According to Deputy Director General Hem Raj Regmi of the CBS, people have left for abroad from all 77 districts of the country. Among them, Kathmandu, Kailali, Jhapa, Rupandehi, and Morang have the highest number of people living abroad, while Manang, Dolpa, Humla, Mugu, and Mustang have the least number of residents living abroad compared to other districts across the country.
