Nagh Panchami today

KATHMANDU, Aug 16: Hindus are observing Nagh Panchami or Sukla Panchami festival. The festival is celebrated by posting 'Nagh' picture above the front door of the house and is worshipped with cow's milk, flowers, and cow dung. 

Nagh Panchami is a traditional worship of snakes in Hinduism. It is celebrated on the fifth day of bright half of Lunar month of Shrawan. There are many legends and folklore in Hindu mythology narrated to the importance of worship of snakes. 

The serpent deity is the taken as the god of water and rain. 

According to some, the day is celebrated in honor of great serpent of the coils on which Lord Bishnu is resting between the universe.
