Debunking myths about cyber safety

Internet eases our life and should be used in wise manner. However, if it is used without cyber security then it might be troublesome as well. There is always a high chance that your devices or network are prone to any kind of offence with a criminal motive, which would not just harm your reputation, but can cause physical or mental damage.

To control such offense we need cyber security. Cyber security is a technological process that is designed to protect both hardware and software from cyber-attacks such as data leakage, or unauthorized access, and hacking.

Though cyber security is crucial in this modern age, there are several myths associated with this. Here are some of them:

1. Cyber safety is not a big deal

People are not aware about cyber crimes and do not consider cyber safety as a big deal. However, large number of cyber crimes has been reported in Nepal.  And, it’s very crucial for one to ensure their cyber safety.

2. Internet is safe in itself

If you think that internet is safe in itself, then you are living in vain because there are so many malwares that can disrupt, damage, or gain unauthorized access to a computer system.

3. Children are safe inside home while using internet safely

Parents think their children are digital friendly and they are out of danger while using internet. However, children might be abused even inside their own room if they are using internet. So it’s crucial to monitor your children’s online activities and ensure their internet safety.

4. Users are not responsible for cyber security

There is a wrong concept in the users that it is service providers’ responsibility or government’s responsibility for cyber security. However, everyone is equally responsible regarding internet safety including users.

5. Cyber safety is not our priority

People do not prioritize their internet safety, which might result in cyber crime. So it’s better to ensure internet safety on time.
