Combating the Crime
Having recently experienced the brutal Acid attack on students Sangita Magar and Seema Basnet in Kathmandu, the fight for safety of Girls has become the central issue for discussion.
The story being covered in all local Newspapers consider it having being in the direct relation to gender issue triggered by male honour, rejection, dowry, and many more. This has put the understanding of its actual cause and cure of the act as unattainable.
Being, socially responsible, we as a citizen should discuss issues which are often ignored in society. Rather than hurting someone’s view or to blame others we should come up with solutions for change.
Acid Act being a showcase of “Masculinity as harm for Men”, we need to stress on the cause of such violence. Majority of the men being emotionally weak, the dominating reason of such violence is their irresistibility towards the rejection to a proposal by women. Such psychological trauma can be prevented by early therapy. Their Aggressive and reclusive attitude can be changed through proper guidance.
Such violence by men victimizes women. Acid attack, leaving the victim with burns on their body, also makes them physically weak. Due to the unruly nature of public adoring external beauty and forgetting the beauty of the inner soul, these girls face societal pressure. This makes them emotionally weak resulting in suicide. With regular treatment, the burns can be healed; shelter of mutually understanding friends can be a great source of support.
Thus, NGOs and INGOs should take the initiation of building rehabilitation centres for both men and women who are suffering emotionally, that saloons for physically injured victims be it from acid attack or rape.
When it comes to solution of a problem, Nepal’s government is often ignored. Considering implementation as a secondary issue, Nepal’s policy should also be put as a point of stress. Acid attack perpetrators must be punished under attempted murder. Perpetrators are booked under culpable homicide which carries only a fine of up to Rs 2,000 and a maximum sentence of four months. If not given a harsh punishment, the victims are barred from justice and the wrong doers are propelled to continue without fear.
There are different types of problems all over the world that we humans face, from the wealthiest countries to the poorest, and it isn’t in the scope of us to assimilate them all in a day. Making correct decisions and implementing them step by step, is the solution.
