KATHMANDU, June 2: No gadgets! No ear-rings! The growing list of Nos is the norm in the school scene these days. Students are forced to restrict themselves to dull-looking dress codes and the use of gadgets is confined to talking only. But when they make the transition from school to college, students enjoy a new-found emancipation in terms of accessorizing and using the technology they love. [break]

Along with going through the bulky course of study, getting well-equipped and remaining abreast of the latest trends has become equally important for them. This is a normal part of life as students are at an age where body image becomes their main focus.

Keeping this in mind, Republica has come up with several must-have accessories and gadgets for those free to wear and use them, but which are all relatively inexpensive. The listings below will help you maintain the classic and updated look while not violating your institution’s dress code.

When we speak of gadgets the first thing that springs to mind are mobile phones. The mobile phone provides students with company in their spare time. Silu Rai, a 12th grader never forgets her red Samsung mobile when she leaves each morning for college. Rai finds it comes in handy most when walking to college every morning as a device through which she can listen to her favorite playlist.

If you like to keep yourself up-to-date about the latest technology yet don’t have the cash to do so, there are ways to do it on a budget. Chinese mobile-phones provide diverse functionality at little expense. In such, Chinese products are in vogue.

Chinese mobiles such as E71 and 5310 (a Nokia rip-off) have various functions such as a dual SIM card, extra memory card space, two megapixel camera, audio and video, and are much cheaper than their branded counterparts.

Anyone can have a mobile phone, but yours can be old hat unless you accessorize it with cool stickers of various cartoon characters and prints along with mobile set bracelets and frills, mainly for girls.

MP3s and iPods. Like Rai, many young busy college students like to utilize their spare time, such as when waiting for their college bus or friend to pick them up. In terms of MP3 players and iPods, who really needs the myriad of functions many of these offer? It’s much cheaper to go to Khasa Bazar and buy a version with basic functions such as a radio and a system for uploading songs. Why radio? As our country is always going through critical points, it’s always best to keep yourself updated.

If you are a technology buff, comparatively inexpensive iPods such as the Generation 4 Nano have many functions, such as sensor touch, 4 GB memory, voicemail, and video with expandable memory.

Notebooks with interesting covers. Want some inspiration to write on your notebooks? Get notebooks with cool prints on the covers, available at many wholesale stores in New Road area. Along with your notebook, don’t forget about its counterpart - the pen. Bear in mind that even such a small accessory can say much about you.

Sling bags are an ‘it’ accessory. But be careful when choosing the brand or print as it may be embarrassing if you buy the same bag a hundred others are carrying around. If you are a good observer you will have noticed many have opted for square-shaped bags with the same logo. Be original and surf the market for a bag which stands out and is durable enough for your daily use. Or if you are a rucksack person, liven up your bags with badges with inspirational or funny slogans. Avoid badges with signs denoting anarchy or making other political statements.

Accessory kit. Having to rummage through your bag to find a pen is exasperating. To avoid this hassle, get a small kit in which to keep those small, but essential, items, such as a pen, scale, and key-ring. You can also include your eyeliner, Gaazal, or even mascara if your school permits. At the very least, have one lip gloss and a perfume pen. We recommend Hugo Boss.

Timepieces. Rather than deal with college administration bugging you about those rubber bangles and leather bands, opting for a nice timepiece would be a better idea. Buying a nice, elegant watch does not have to make you sweat. There are many budget-friendly watches available on the market.

Small things, such as socks and scarves, can be a big turn-off if not selected properly. Boys should avoid socks which look as if they were borrowed from their fathers. If permitted by your college administration, you can get a little experimental by getting colored socks. Or go for patterns. Argyle prints are currently the coolest in town. And, guys, get over those yin-yang printed scarves. Impress your friends with something different.

Wallets and purses. It’s time to grow up people and get your own money-holder. By now, most of you will have started earning your own money or are given the freedom to spend the pocket money given to you as you see fit. What better way to help manage your money than by keeping it in a wallet.

Shoes. As students are confined to black, what can be done with those boring college shoes? With a little effort and creativity, you can find shoes that don’t look like school shoes. Replace them with loafers or any black-colored shoes, or buy an extra pair of cool laces to freshen up your old shoes. For girls, simple black court shoes or even girly loafers are an apt substitute.
