DHADING, April 24: Nilkantha Municipality has started demolishing the illegal structures built by encroaching upon public land in the municipality.

The campaign to demolish the illegal structures has been started from ward no.3 of the municipality. Houses and buildings built by encroaching upon public land and river banks are being bulldozed under the campaign. As promised during the elections, local representatives said they want to develop this municipality as a smart city in the next few years.

Bhim Prasad Dhungana, mayor of Nilkantha Municipality, said that the demolition of illegal structures is the first step towards well-managed settlements. "No one is allowed to build structures by encroaching upon public property," said Mayor Dhungana, adding, "We will demolish all illegal structures." The municipality had time and again publicized notices urging the people who have built illegal structures to remove their buildings on their own.  But still, locals didn't pay much heed to the notice. This compelled the municipality to bulldoze the illegal structures.

After the demolition of illegal structures, the municipality will start widening the roads in the municipality. Especially the land near Thopal and Arun River near the district headquarters have been rampantly encroached upon in recent days.

Locals living on the banks of the river have protested against the demolition of illegal structures by the municipality.
