The difference arose as lawmakers belonging to Madhes-based parties argued that Hindi should be named as official language in the new constitution while the parliamentarians from other political parties strongly protested the proposal.
Muga Lal Yadav of Madhesi People´s Rights Forum (MPRF) and Gauri Mahato Koiri of Sadbhavana Party (SP), among others, had proposed to name Hindi as one of the official languages of Nepal in the constitution, arguing that people living in the Tarai do not understand Nepali language properly.
They made the proposal during a meeting of the Committee for Determination of Bases for Cultural and Social Solidarity (CDBCSS) at Singha Durbar.
Madhesi lawmakers have announced they want a vote to decide the issue even as the lawmakers from other parties asked them to write ´note of dissent´ on the issue while forwarding the concept papers and proposals to be prepared by the committee and its sub-committees to Constituent Assembly (CA).
There is a provision for holding further discussions in the CA to resolve the dispute.
The chairperson of the committee, Nabodita Chaudhari, said the committee meeting scheduled for Thursday will resolve the dispute. The CDBCSS will finalize its concept papers and proposals once the dispute over Hindi as official language is resolved.
The lawmakers have lately been disputing over various terminologies to be used in the new constitution.
On Monday, the lawmakers in the committee were sharply divided over whether to include the term ´people´s war´ in the new constitution, forcing the chairperson Chaudhari to conduct voting on the issue.
Of the total 32 CA members present at the committee meeting, 19 voted in favor of using the term ´armed conflict´ instead in new constitution. While 12 members belonging to Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) voted for ´people´s war´ one of the members abstained from voting.
