KATHMANDU, Oct 1: Keeping in view the increase in crimes in the Kathmandu Valley during the festive season, the Metropolitan Police Range Offices (MPROs) have come up with security plans in order to check crimes. The MPROs have focused on mobilizing plain-clothes police personnel and conducting motor patrolling to tackle financial crimes which increase with the arrival of the Dashain festival.

All three MPROs have said that they will be focusing on controlling financial crimes and conducting strict checking at the entry points of the districts. The MPROs have also said that plain-clothes police personnel will be mobilized in the day and ambushes will be set up in the night to control crime in the Valley during the festive season. They have confirmed that the offices will provide 24 hours service throughout the festive season.

Chief of Kathmandu MPRO, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Basant Lama said that the police range is focusing on universal reach and quick delivery of service for the upcoming festive season. “We will be working to stop these crimes and make sure that the criminals are arrested,” he said.

According to him, as people go out of the Valley to celebrate the festivals at their ancestral houses, leaving their houses in the Valley empty, criminals take advantage and break into such houses. He added that there is an increase in financial crimes too. The Kathmandu MPRO plans to mobilize 3,535 police personnel during the festive season. The range will also mobilize 32 mobile patrolling.

The Bhaktapur MPRO will also be focusing on the security of the highways in addition to the common security plans devised by all three districts. Chief of the range, Superintendent of Police (SP) Himalaya Kumar Shrestha said, “We will set up ticket booths as well as checking points on the highways in order to secure the highways in the district.”

He added that the range will also focus on delivering security to even the remote parts of the district. The range is also focusing on providing security at the major temples. The range is mobilizing 508 personnel, 21 mobile patrolling teams and 36 motorcycle patrols in the festive season.

The MPRO Lalitpur has planned to focus on robbery control, controlling gambling and excessive use of alcohol in the festive season. “Many people go berserk due to the alcohol they consume, which causes disruption in the community,” Lalitpur MPRO Chief Shekhar Khanal said, adding, “We will conduct search and seal operation on the production centers of bootlegged alcohol.” The range will be mobilizing 1,225 personnel, 15 mobile patrolling and 25 motorcycle patrolling in the festive season.

The Dashain festival will start with Ghatasthapana on October 10 and continue with Fulpati on October 16 and Bijaya Dashami on October 19.
