Most of the central committee members who spoke at a meeting Tuesday said there was no alternative to pushing the united party ahead, keeping to center stage on issues concerning the Madhesi people.
"All the 10 to 12 members speaking at the meeting have stressed the need for strong unity in the party," said party spokesperson Jitendra Dev.
Dambar Narayan Yadav, Dr Tilak Rawal, Dr Subodh Narayan Jha and Upendra Jha were among the leaders to speak at Tuesday´s meeting. "We joined this party with a view to making the party a national party while focusing on Madhes issues," said Dr Rawal. "So the party must maintain its unity."
Most of the members spoke in similar vein and cautioned the leaders not to split the party, according to Rawal.
Chairman Upendra Yadav and Parliamentary Party leader Bijaya Gachchhadar put forth their views on the political situation that has developed after the prime minister´s resignation.
Chairman Yadav tabled the party´s letter sent to UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal extending the party´s support to the Nepali Congress-UML led alliance and Khanal´s letter expressing commitment to implementing the eight-point agreement signed by the government in February 2008.
The meeting endorsed the letter, according to party spokesperson Dev.
The members, however, were still divided on whether the party should join the government. They suggested the party leadership join the government after taking a formal decision.
"The party will take a formal decision on the issue through another meeting," said Dev.
