KATHMANDU, May 21: Sales of canned iced tea have increased by as much as 25 percent this season due to rise in mercury and change in consumption habit of local people.

Sushil Subedi, sales executive of Bigmart Mart at Kamalpokahari, said his mart was selling about 1,100 cans of iced tea a month compared to 600-700 cans of last month. “We expect the sales to grow further with the rise in temperature,” added Subedi.[break]

Lipton, 100 Plus Isotonic Drink, F&N Seasons, Chabaa, Super, Druk and Pokka are some of the popular iced tea brands available in the local market. These products are imported from countries like Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and India.

Iced tea are available in all departmental stores, restaurants, mini marts, health clubs, sports bars and major stopovers along major trekking routes across the country. They are available in different flavors such as lemon, pomegranate, orange, apple, peach, guava, raspberry, mint, jasmine and green tea.

Shiva Basnet, marketing manager of Blue Bird Mart, said sales of iced tea have increased as people prefer cool drink over hot beverages during summer. “Iced tea not only refreshes people but also quenches the thirst for tea,” added Basnet.

Traders say iced tea is healthy as it is made of whole leaf tea without additives. Unlike tea and coffee, it is caffeine free. It is because of this fact that iced tea is mostly preferred by youngsters, executives and sports persons.

Chabba guava iced tea of 230ml pack costs Rs 42 in the market, whereas 240ml pack of Druk lemo tea costs Rs 58. F&N Season iced tea in lemon flavor (300ml) costs Rs 72, while iced tea by the same brand in apple and peach flavors costs Rs 76 each for a 300ml pack. 100 Plus Isotonic Drink lemon tea is available at Rs 68, while Pokka mango tea (330ml) and Super lemon tea (300ml) are available at Rs 65 and Rs 58 respectively.

“I am a tea lover. But I prefer iced tea over hot tea during summer as it refreshes us,” said Pranav Ghimire, a customer.

Kamana Shrestha, cashier at Bhat-Bhateni, said the demand for iced tea is also increased as they are often served as alternative to other soft drinks.
