Meteorologist at the Meteorological Forecasting Division (MFD) said that this year’s monsoon, which became active in Nepal one week later than expected, will last a week longer.[break]
“Normally, monsoon retreats on September 23,” said meteorologist Sudeep Kayastha. “However, there is no cookie-cutter date for monsoon to recede.”
According to senior meteorologist Rajendra Shrestha, westerly winds in the upper part of atmosphere, which tends to get weak with the onset of monsoon, is yet to become active. “This has prolonged monsoon,” he said. “After one week, westerly wind will regain its strength, forcing monsoon to move back.”
