“There is a strong westerly disturbance in Kashmir which is not allowing the monsoon to enter into Nepal at the moment,” says KB Malla, meteorologist at the Meteorological Forecasting Division.
The monsoon arrived in Sikkim due to a depression at the Bay of Bengal, but as the depression ended after two days, monsoon activity has remained minimal in northern India. However, the monsoon is currently strong in Karnataka and Orissa and is moving north.
“Monsoon should enter Nepal this week, but I can´t guarantee the exact date,” says Malla.
The normal time for the monsoon to enter Nepal is June 10. The current hot spell indicates the rains are on the way. Maximum temperature in Kathmandu remained under 30 degrees last week, but reached 31 on Sunday.
"It will only get hotter until monsoon arrives, after which the maximum temperature should drop to 20-22 degrees,” Malla says.
Monsoon expected to enter Nepal within two to four days
