KATHMANDU, July 15: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has begun an investigation into allegations that the French company, Oberthur Technologies, had proposed a non-compliant printer technology and fake user certificates in its bidding document to supply machine readable passports to Nepal, said a source at the ministry.

The ministry began the probe after Indonesia-based Perum Peruri and British De La Rue International Limited filed separate petitions at the ministry seeking revision of the decision to award the French company with the job of supplying the smart passports to Nepal. [break]

The French firm has proposed in the tender to use products of Park and OPC Co for personalization of the passports and has submitted user certificate from Korea. But Perum Peruri has furnished an email from the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade that the ministry had no prior engagement with Park and OPC Co for personalization of printers.

“We have been following the issue here,” said Nepali Ambassador in Seoul Kamal Prasad Koirala over telephone.
