KATHMANDU, July 3: The criminal justice system can only be made trustworthy if forensic science service is modernized and its quality upgraded, speakers at a programme have asserted.

Participants at an interaction on 'Forensic Science Service Consolidation' organized by Nepal Police on Friday, complained Nepal's forensic science was not entirely scientific which raised doubts over the credibility on criminal investigation.

On the occasion, Supreme Court Justice Kalyan Shrestha pointed out that 'the place where science cries justice cannot laugh' and urged everyone not to take forensic science on peremptory note.Shrestha argued that criminals cannot be allowed to be a step ahead of police and underlined the need for investment in an important aspect of science and a deep study to strengthen the criminal justice.

Furthermore, he added that due to the absence of an investment to modernize forensic science the verdicts and investigations were not based on science, but on personal discretion.

At the programme, Chief Secretary Lilamani Poudel stressed on keeping forensic science on a separate arrangement and called for spreading the investigation capability enhancement to lowest of levels. He insisted that the police force must go all-out into adapting to forensic science expertise.

Inspector General of Police Upendra Kant Aryal said the police institution was working to modernize the Nepal Police to suit the contemporary time and make it technologically advance.

Teaching Hospital's Prof Dr Harihar Wasti presented a working paper stating that the use of forensic science in criminal investigation was hugely important and stressed the urgency for time-bound modernization. RSS
