MMC stun APF to enter QF

POKHARA, Jan 28: Manang Marshyangdi Club (MMC) stunned the Armed Police Force (APF) with a 3-1 victory on Thursday to secure a quarterfinal berth in the ongoing Eighth Aaha Gold Cup Football Tournament being held at the Pokhara Stadium.



Jagjeet Shrestha netted a brace and Shiva Shrestha scored another for MMC. APF skipper Jivesh Pandey scored the only goal for the team. [break]



MMC will take on Dhaka Sporting Club, Bangladesh, on Monday. MMC were winners in 2004 and 2005 and runners up in 2007.



In the competitive match, Jagjeet opened the scoring in the 31st minute through a superb free-kick from the edge of box.



APF with an attempt to comeback leveled the scoring in the early second half. Jivesh scored in the 50th minute utilizing a free-kick pass from Nara Kumar Rai.



But, Shiva Shrestha again scored for MMC in the 75th minute to double the advantage in a free-kick of Jagjeet. The tournament hero Jagjeet again scored through a free-kick in the injury time to seal the victory. Deepak Bhusal of MMC was declared man-of-the-match.



Both the teams missed some good scoring opportunities in the match.



MMC coach Chhiring Lopsang said the team emerged victorious due to errors of opponent goalie. He also praised the good teamwork of his team.



APF coach Maheshwar Mulmli said the team faced defeat due to the lack of scoring power. He also lamented the goalie’s performance.
