MMC defeated the academy team of I-League side Mohun Bagan 1-0 at the Chamlingthan Stadium. The second victory in as many matches lifted MMC, the champion of Gurkha Cup held about a month ago in Kathmandu, to the top of Group A with six points. MMC had defeated Yeedzin FC of Bhutan 3-1 in its first match on Wednesday. [break]
Mohun Bagan remained unchanged in the fourth spot with one point in the five-team group.
Rai scored with a powerful shot to put MMC ahead nine minutes into the second half. MMC will now meet another Nepali team NMB Machhindra FC on Thursday. With a win and a draw, Machhindra lies in the second place with four points. The top two teams of the group will advance into the semifinals.
MMC has traveled to Bhutan without five first choice players -- skipper Sagar Thapa, Bishal Shrestha, Sulav Maskey, Shiva Shrestha and Anil Gurung -- as they are undergoing a closed camp training with the national team as part of preparations for the SAFF Championship.
National champion Laxmi Bank Three Star Club will take on BJMC of Bangladesh on Tuesday.
